This is a great argument. My counter to this is that it is not clearly stated exactly what life would be wiped out. For my argument, I talked primarily about size, but what if the Flood's food source has to be sufficiently sentient? At first, I would say that a deer, for example, should be a fine host for the flood...it's nervous system is not much different than a human's.

Then I thought about Keyes' battle with the Flood infection form. It hungered for memories and emotional experiences, which most likely are only exist in sentient life forms. It, of course, hungers for what it eats.

Thus Earth's record shows no large-scale extinction of life because there was none. I didn't say that Earth was the Forerunner's (our) original home planet...just one that they tried to seed.
