By safeguards, I only meant that 343 Guilty Spark was not allowed to retrieve the Index (units of his classification was not allowed to), and that he found it unacceptable that a Construct was in the core.

Note that he didn't think it was impossible for a construct to be in the core, he just found it unacceptable. In other words, it sounded more like the core is the equivalent to "the fancy living room" where the kids aren't allowed to play.

Now Cortana, never did do much but talk about the vast wealth of knowledge in the core. She was basically, powerless to control Halo from there. Her words about the experience were, "I've spent the last 12 hours cooped up in here, watching you toady about, helping that thing get set to slit our throats!"

This doesn't seem to me like Cortana had much luck controlling Halo from within the core.

Another note, she called 343 Guilty Spark a "thing" not a "construct" but we know he is described as an Alien Construct in the books. When you call someone a thing, that is disassociate that person from humanity, as in they aren't acting human. I wonder is "thing" is Cortana's equivalent to us calling 343 GS a beast or the devil?
