Well, I just finished reading Ringworld Enginers, and this got me thinking, what if they are like the Protectors in Larry Niven's world. The protectors of the stupidier offspring who have not yet tasted the "tree of life." Now instead of the lack of "tree of life" in Niven's novel, maybe some sort of fallen angels/forerunner/protector's offspring evolved into what is now mankind. Another possible reference to the Known Space series.
Or what if the flood could be a reference to the actual forerunner before they eat whatever the "tree of life" may be. They could have run out of the tree of life and could not transfer into the smarter protector/forerunner.
Another thought, the same above thing could relate to one species of covenent, most likely the elites or prophets, as they are the ones who actually refer to the forerunner as the forerunner. They could have been the offspring of the tree of life eaters, but the trees of life disseapered, or possibly were unwittingly destroyed by human space explorers.
Whatever. /rant.
BTW, there is a new Ring World book coming out sometime this year, for those who didnt know.
