In Response To: 343GS Level Analysis *VERY Long* (skraeling) Very nice job skraeling. I tried looking in Halo: The Flood by William C. Dietz to find anything more about the design of the level. Surprisingly to me, I did not find any references to the symbols on the walls or the lights besides the doors. This implies that the symbols and lights aren't that important to the story. Whatever meaning the symbols and lights have, it was something put into the game by the level designers and most likely not something straight from the Halo Story Bible. What was mentioned in the book was Covenant crates and flood lights, and how the surface part of the Forerunner complex reminded the Master Chief vaguely of an arachnid (different than the graceful spires found elsewhere on Halo). I wonder if the number of crates found in an area are any indication of the importance an area is to the Covenant? Another point about the symbols, the Master Chief intuitively knew how to use control panels on Halo, but I wonder if the symbols on the 343 GS level had been mentioned in the book, if the Master Chief would have intuitively known what they meant? So after failing to find anything in the book, but enjoying reading portions of the book again, my son and I decided to investigate the level in the game. Well we confer that the purple symbol found outside the elevator rooms mean elevator, but there is one elevator room that didn't have this symbol on it. The rest of the symbols come in pairs and so do the lights besides some of the doors. Our observation was that the paired lights had to do with the state of the current door and the next door on the opposite side (or something on the other side). The light on the left (except for one pair where the left light was rotated 90 degrees) indicated whether the door was locked or at least indicated a state in which the door should or shouldn't be locked. The light on the right indicated the state on the other side of the door. For example, when the door leads to one of those square sections, if the right light is red (note: I'm not exactly sure if this really works all the time) then the second door on the opposite side of the square section will be locked. The lights blink too, but we couldn't find any pattern that made sense with this. More speculation about the symbols... They come in pairs except for the elevator symbol, and at points the paired symbols line up on the left and right side of doors above the left and right light. Again this could indicate state. The light on the left could be described by the symbol above it, and the light on the right described by the symbol above it. This could be some kind of key used for that part of the level. It could be as simple as one symbol describes "open" or safe state, and the other symbol describes "closed" or alert state. Each symbol could represent a vast amount of information, a total list of protocols and procedures, much like how the Master Chief knew how to use the control panels, the symbols (if Forerunner) could unlock the knowledge in those that view them rather than try to spell it out. Each symbol could be like a key that accesses information already in those that look at it. Those that don't have that knowledge already imbedded in them, like us, would look at the symbols and not have any clue what they mean. Just some thoughts. |
