In Response To: Halo PC Complaints. Say what you will. (guy who doesn't post....too often) Pardon my ranting.... Being a Mac person myself, my experience with GBX's port has been limited. But also, in a way, the fact that I've needed to leech off of friends' PCs to play HPC has allowed me to use it on many different system configurations. I've used it on a crappy old laptop that barely meets the requirements, a few home-configured PCs made for gaming, and an off-the-shelf retail My experience has been that in order to play the game with any sort of smoothness, a lot of tweaking has to be done to make it run at a decent speed. Every time I turn off shadows, or detailed textures, or the like, I cringe when I think what I might be missing. Yet, like every game, I'm always willing to (and often do) turn every setting to minimum if it helps me get a better FPS, thus being able to play the game better. So a lot of my HPC experience has been turning down every setting, expecting to be rewarded with great framerate, and being frustrated and angry when all I get is crappier graphics. Even at the local computer gaming center, I was forced to turn the graphics all the way down on their best computers designed specifically for gaming, only to be rewarded by choppiness over a LAN with 3 people playing. Sure, it was minor choppiness, but a game should run smoothly or not run at all. As for the lag in internet play, I'd just like to state how immensely frustrating it is to cope with the terrible lag in HPC. Now, not to brag, but I've always been kickass at xbox halo. Few can beat me (those that did were usually playing me on a laggy xbc connection, or in a 4v1 camping situation). In HPC, however, I suck. I simply suck. Now part of that has to do with the difference between a controller and a mouse and keyboard, but more of it has to do with the awful lag which I experience on every server. I can line up perfect head shots, time across-the-map rocket shots perfectly, but when my target suddenly moves 12 feet to the right, all of that is useless, and I look like a bumbling n00b running around with his pants down. Anyone who has been in such a situation knows just how frustrating it is. Much of your skill in HPC depends not on how good you actually are, but how much you spent on your hardware, and how lucky you get with the lag. Let me just say that I've played the beta version (that early one that was leaked) and although I am aware of the fact that it was an early beta, the final version doesnt feel much different. We are all simply suckers in a giant public beta test, except that each of us was required to pay $50 to participate. And I'd also like to reiterate how any success of the PC version has been caused purely by the astounding quality of the xbox version. Bungie created a game that has spawned not only some totally great gaming moments, but an entire culture as well. I have never had more fun playing a game than I do with xbox Halo. It's as simple as that. The graphics, while good, are nothing too special. The weapons, while good, are nothing revolutionary. The maps, while good, are pretty basic. Other gamers who prefer other games point these things out to me all the time. But what makes Halo the greatest game ever is the fact that it's so f'ing fun to play. Isn't that what a game should be about? If Gearbox can fix HPC to the point where it's as fun as xbox Halo to play, then I will never doubt them again. I'm a bit worried about purchasing the Mac version and running it on my 700mhz g4 with a 32mb geforce2 mx due to the fact that it's based on the GBX code, but part of me believes that Westlake will have done things right. For one thing, Mac Halo is OpenGL, not DX9 like HPC (DX9 sucks.) |
