John Carmack, in one of his .plans, has called tiled textures "a crappy form of image compression." However, I don't recall him discussing procedural textures. However, something like the effect of procedural textures can be done with multitexturing. One lays down multiple textures with different repeat lengths. One can even scrimp on texture bulk by using the same texture several times, but with differently-scaled texture coordinates for each rendering (in texture mapping, each vertex of the surface to be rendered is associated with some location in the texture image -- that's the texture coordinates). [cross-fading textures...] Interesting idea. | |
