It works just fine for me on a standard install of Win95 with DirectX 7. The only caveat is that you shouldn't run the Marathon 2 installer as this seems to install an old version of DirectX libraries over your current version, possibly breaking things like networking. Simply copy the Marathon 2 directory to your HD and run it from there.
