GIFs have the ability to embed comments within them that can be viewed with applications like Graphic Converter and JPEGView, as well as others, I'm sure. I don't know what other graphic formats can do the same, but I know that Photoshop can embed watermarks (sort of the same thing, but meant to preserve copyrights). Basically, someone could have placed a comment to aid in the translation in the GIF.
