I might have been unclear; I wasn't implying that Bungie had simply invented a numerical system from scratch for the first circle, but rather that the glyph vaguely reminds me of a real numerical system. Since the other glyphs seem to be related to various ways to express numerals, I don't think it's entirely unlikely that Bungie would have used a system related to the one I tried to explain.
Of course, that's if that system exists in a place other than my head :-)
Meanwhile, I thought of another way to interpret the first glyph. Imagine that the whole alphabet is mapped onto this nine-square grid, with letters looping back to the first square when the ninth square is reached. In this case, the first square with a "I" in it would be "A", and the third square with a "II" in it would be "L", etc. The first glyph in this case would represent the letter "F"...
But I'm venturing too far into the "making stuff up" realm. That definitely wouldn't be Bungie's style. But hey, any good brainstorm session isn't censored, is it? :-)
