Yeah, the way they teach high school chemistry is a bit confusing. The best way I found to look at it is that the Bohr model, Lewis model etc are more historical than exemplary. To understand valence bonds you eventually have to look at electrons as shells of varying potential.

Yes, that had occurred to me as well. I'm still not sure whether the crazy clocks are supposed to have only eight positions each, or whether you're supposed to fill in four each to make twelve. If they are supposed to be filled in, some sort of link between dials could do the trick. If on the other hand they only have eight positions, the solution might have to do with converting the numbers to a smaller clock dial. But that seems a little more mathematical than it's been so far, and a little less elegant.
