There are a few things i can pull from this message. The first, and most important, is that not only was a theory proposed yesterday that was close... but it was the *second* proposal of that same theory. Similarly, it sounds as if the theory belonged to its own "line of reasoning," a line which was dropped. Hence what we are looking might very well be one of the old theories we dredged up that was discarded again... and the theory might also be belonging to a completely different mode of thinking than current theories out there.

Also, is Claude making a pun with his "wasn't thinking.... horizontally enough" line? Perhaps the theory was close, and all the author had to do was flip the figure horizontally? Or read the figure left to right instead of up to down? Food for thought at the very least.
