They are most certainly not closed, I am glad someone else finally realized this. Its plain as day, maybe most other people see it too...
I don't know how you blew that image up but you did loose the original integrity... how did you do it? I used GraphicConverter (mac bootleg photoshop) and got much better results. You can tell its off by looking at the 5... it doesn't even have the middle line.

Either way, they aren't closed. The image would of been drawn differently if they were.
