Could also be a reference to Polyphemus (the cyclops) from the Odyssey, if you're going with the single eye theory. He lived on an island in the sea and had one eye. I doubt this is correct, though. There's no explicit reference in this glyph to only one eye.
I think medusa and her systers also shared a single eye between them (or was it another group of hideous sisters?). Can't remember if they lived on an island though.
