Seeing all this talk of IP addresses made me think of a similar concept from Stargate. The Stargate could transport people throughout the universe with 7 unique numbers. Two for the X-axis, two for the Y, two for the Z, and the seventh the 'home' co-ordinate. Any thoughts?
